Born Steven Cheng in the summer of '87, I go by the name of SuperPlex;
I reside in the North East of England, UK.When I was growing up, I was always looking for
a creative outlet; it pretty much began when I found hip-hop in 2000.My favourite
artists/groups back then included the likes of 2Pac, Jay-Z and The Wu-Tang Clan.My
favourite album, even to this days has to be The Blueprint (Jay-Z), it must have been the
first album with the kind of production that blew me away it was on a whole
different level compared to other east coast albums.I started making beats in the spring
of '04 - there was always a Yamaha keyboard in the house, I began to experiment with that
when I realised that it could be connected to a computer.I gradually expanded my set-up to
include Image-Line's FLStudio 6 and AKAI's MPD16 MIDI pad control unit. My work doesn't
necessarily emulate that of another producer; I like to think of my work as a jig saw
influenced by many sources - I'm quite satisfied with my progress so far in developing my
own style. These days, I love listening to the work of a lot of different producers both
past and present (not restricted to hip-hop) from the likes of Pete Rock and DJ Premier to
Kanye West, Just Blaze, Dangermouse, Daft Punk, and Moby.As far artists are concerned, I
like a lot of work by Dilated Peoples, Immortal Technique and Common.
I'm still in the early stages as far as
getting my music heard, since hip-hop isn't active in my hometown, the Internet is my main
outlet. I have produced four tracks for
an artist I'm currently working with (Yung An). At
the moment I'm continuing to build more relationships, which would help towards launching
a potential career.A long-term goal of mine would be to produce a song for a major artist
and eventually release a compilation of tracks I produced.
Right now I'll do what ever it takes to get my name out there.
